Fourteen

With the evening shadows descending on our little picnic, Caden turned to face me to see what I’d discovered in the backpack. The question in his eyes shifted to happiness as he caught sight of my devious kitten. He chuckled, obviously happier to see Kookie than I was. “Look at you, little girl. How did you end up in Evie’s bag?”

I scoffed. “How did she end up inside there? I’ll tell you how. She asked to come with me, and I told her no, so she snuck in when I wasn’t looking.”

I held her adorable face close to mine and glared. “You need to learn to listen to me.”

Kookie narrowed her golden-eyed gaze. You need to listen to me, too.

Caden tugged her from my hands. “It’s okay. She’s just little and doesn’t know better.”

I turned to him in disbelief. “She one-hundred percent knows better. She wanted to come on our date because she loves to explore, and she wants to give you kitten kisses.”

A pleased smile curved his lips as he gazed at my rebellious little one. “Is that true? Well, come here.” He kissed the top of her head and then held her close to his cheek. Kookie placed both of her white-tipped paws on his face and licked him twice.

Caden’s grin grew bigger as he cradled her against his chest and settled on the blanket. “You have a sweet little girl, Evie.”

The two of them were too cute for me to be annoyed, and I ended up chuckling as I took a seat next to them. “You might change your mind when you end up eating crushed potato chips.”

He kissed her head again. “It’ll be worth it.”

I unloaded the backpack, revealing our sandwiches, smashed bags of chips, grapes, and the small, crumbly bag of cookies. Caden set my kitten on the blanket near him as he nodded with appreciation at our dinner.

I opened my sandwich, and Kookie telepathically sent me a wave of images involving pieces of turkey and her own excitement. I chuckled, pulling out a small piece of meat and placing it on the blanket in front of her.

Caden took a bite of his sandwich and nodded as he chewed. “Perfect. Just like this spot. Valerie was correct. Young couples have been coming here forever.”

I slid a teasing gaze in his direction. “You sound like you have firsthand knowledge of that. Did you ever bring someone here?”

In the waning light, a sparkle lit his eyes. “Only you.”

I searched my mostly blank memory for the summer we’d spent together, but came up with nothing, which broke my heart. “Did we…”

His laugh echoed through the surrounding trees. “It was our first time.”

I closed my eyes as a wave of disappointment rolled over me. “It’s not fair. I should have those memories.”

Caden reached for my hand, wrapping his fingers around mine. “You never know. They might come back.” He sidled closer to me on the blanket until our thighs touched. “If not, we can always make new ones.”

He leaned in and kissed my neck, sending a wave of shivers through me.
